Intellectual Property

For some time certain publishers have deprived translators of their rights – not only of appropriate payment, but also of their intellectual property rights, which is recognized by Brazilian law. They may publish a new “translation” by a Mr. X, totally free of intellectual property rights, from the existing translation of an out-of-print book…

Denise Bottmann, professor and translator, has for some years waged a continuing battle against this practice, and has succeeded in getting the attention of the authorities of the Ministry of Culture. On November 9 and 10, 2015 she gave a lecture at an event of the Ministry of Culture in São Paulo, defending her proposals.
